World champions Jennifer Kessy and April Ross of USA and Germany’s Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig booked a spot in the Myslowice Open semifinals while top seeds Antonelli and Talita of Brazil face an uphill battle after being knocked into the loser’s bracket on Friday.
Fellow Brazilians Maria Clara and Carol beat Antonelli and Talita in the third round in 50 minutes 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 15-12) before losing to Goller and Ludwig 2-0 (23-21, 21-13) in the fourth round. Antonelli and Talita beat third seeds Xue and Zhang of China in 41 minutes 2-0 (23-21, 24-22) in their loser’s bracket match to set up a do or die match against Austria’s Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger, who have yet to beat the Brazilians, who had lost to Goller and Ludwig in round three.
Kessy and Ross, the number two seeds, made light work of 14th seeds Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti of Italy in the fourth round winning 21-15, 21-19 in 37 minutes having earlier beaten Brazil’s Lili and Vieira in 35 minutes (21-15, 21-9) in round three.
After beating the Schwaiger sisters 2-1 ( 24-22, 20-22, 15-11) in round three Goller, who celebrates her 27th birthday on Saturday, and Ludwig had an easier passage against the Salgado sisters to advance to their first semifinal of the year and guarantee themselves their best finish in Poland, which was seventh in Myslowice in 2008.
After being knocked out of the tournament by Walsh/Hochevar fellow American Fendrick said: “We should have won the first game. We had opportunities in the first game that we did not capitalise on. We made some errors at the beginning so we were fighting from the get go. We made some good defensive plays, good blocks. We will take the lessons we learnt here to Beijing and Rome.”
Six teams remain in the loser’s bracket of the competition including two from Brazil and one from Italy.
The Myslowice Open, which takes place May 17-22, is the second single-gender event on this year’s circuit and the fourth overall for women after stops in Brasilia, Sanya and Shanghai.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2011, the international beach volleyball circuit is in Myslowice for the fourth consecutive season and the eighth straight year in Poland. The Myslowice Open, being played at the Summer Sports Resort, will be the second time and first since 2008 that a women’s FIVB Swatch World Tour event will be held in the southwestern Polish community. It is also the seventh time in the last six years that the women will play in Poland.
The second FIVB Swatch World Tour event in Poland for the fourth consecutive year will be the $600,000 Mazuri Orlen Grand Slam to be held from July 25 to 31 in Stare Jablonki. The Stare Jablonki event is the fifth of six double-gender Grand Slam events on the 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour schedule.
While the women compete in Myslowice, the men will take part in the Prague Open in the Czech Republic from Tuesday to Sunday.
